Beeloved

Anchor 1

Beeloved is a senior capstone short film, and is the story of a landscaper (Blake) and a lawyer (Casey) who fall in love because of a little bee (Beetly) determined to help them get together after work. I had the privilege of working as the 3D Animation Lead.

My Shots

This was one of the first shots being animated, and at the same time we were still experimenting with the animation style, so the timing would have to continue to be worked on.

Though still simple, the timing was starting to come together. While the animation style is more blocky, it was important to flesh out how the timing could be used so nothing is too even.

More in-between poses are added, though the shot still needs some final polishing for the camera movement and the squash and stretch so it can flow smoother.

I didn't worry about the dirt yet, the main goal was to block out the motion of both characters.

I experimented with different simple vfx to see what might work best for the dirt being scooped up in the shot. Ultimately, animated geometry matched the style more so that's what we used.

Close to final animation for the shot. Because the dirt is animated geometry, I added in some other meshes to replicate falling dirt clumps. Everything was hand-keyed, including the ground deformation.

Because of the block-y style, I first focused on where exactly I wanted Beetly to be positioned while the camera moves.

Adding in some more poses, I also had to change some of the positioning throughout so Beetly wouldn't end up at the edge of the frame when the shot ends.

Keeping the animation on the body, I parented Beetly's root control to a locator which was attached the camera. Now when the camera moves on every frame, Beetly will follow smoothly instead of moving forward on blocked out frames like he did in earlier passes. The camera was also pushed closer to the timestamp on the computer to become emphasized in the final version.
